Advanced Photography Camp Application
Coaching Detroit Forward’s Advanced Photography Camp is designed to reinforce photography concepts and help students reach the next level of photographic expression.
During the one-week camp led by Coach Sacred Overstreet-Amos, students learn studio lighting for headshots, product shots, food photography and more. They will be given various exercises to photograph some of the major styles of photography, including but not limited to, black and white, architecture, portraits, documentary, products, etc. Students will be exposed to the work of inspirational photographers past and present, and practice will be a large part of this program.
In addition to photographing a personal project that will be published in Perspectives Magazine, students will collaborate on a group photoshoot where they plan the lighting, models, backdrop, props and more.
Students will learn how to efficiently organize their photos by setting up a basic image workflow: capture, transfer, post-process, print/web and editing photographs using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. This method will be useful for students who wish to turn their photography into a business or hone their craft.
Space is limited to 14 students. The camp is free for Detroit high school students and students who live in the city of Detroit. The 2024 camp will take place at The House of Hip-Hop ran by the nonprofit Class Act Detroit.
*PREREQUISITE:
To attend this program, students must have an understanding of how to shoot in manual mode. They may have attended the Coaching Detroit Forward Beginner Photography Camp or another photography program or class where they learned camera basics.

Critique and feedback will offer guidance for each student as they move toward mastering their camera. By the end of the camp, students will be comfortable using their digital camera with predictable and repeatable results, gain confidence in making deliberate decisions, discover how to critique and engage in thoughtful discussion and begin to communicate through photography instead of just taking snapshots.
Each student will be given a laptop and a camera to use during the camp. Students will be given assignments to take photos at home and in their community. They will be expected to actively participate and engage in discussions, lessons and activities.
Students will pick their favorite photos they captured, and they will be printed in the fifth edition of Perspectives Magazine. Students’ photos may also be entered in the Society for Professional Journalists Detroit Awards. See photos captured by students in our previous Advanced Photography Camp.
Photography Exhibition:
In November 2024, Coaching Detroit Forward will host a Perspectives Magazine Launch Party and Photography Exhibition celebrating the photos captured by students. The students’ photos will be exhibited at the House of Hip-Hop. Students, families and the community will be invited to attend the exhibition. Perspectives Magazine will also be distributed at this time.
